Northgate Link Extension

The transformative Northgate Link Extension stands as a key component of Sound Transit’s extensive 25-year system expansion and connects the University of Washington at Husky Stadium, to the University District and the Northgate neighborhood.

Spanning 4.3 miles with three new stations – two underground stations that serve the U District and Roosevelt neighborhoods, and one elevated station at Northgate – this project provides reliable, traffic-free trips between Northgate and downtown Seattle in only 14 minutes while offering a swift connection to Sea-Tac Airport in just 47 minutes. Operated through twin tunnels from the University of Washington Station, the Northgate Link Extension is estimated to serve more than 60,000 weekday riders by 2030.

STV, in joint venture with Mott McDonald, managed the systems construction for this light rail project. The team, known as Northwest Transit Systems Partners, provided technical review, construction management, quality assurance and inspection services for the extension’s traction power, communications, signaling and train control systems, contributing to the efficient operation of trains and helping create a safe and reliable experience for commuters.

Approved by voters alongside the East Link Extension in 2008, the Northgate Link Extension embodies Sound Transit’s commitment to enhancing access to public transit infrastructure across the Puget Sound region. Following Northgate’s completion in 2021, Sound Transit entered an exciting period of unveiling major light rail extensions every year through 2024, effectively tripling the region’s light rail system from 22 miles to 62 miles.
