NYC Health + Hospitals/South Brooklyn Health Ruth Bader Ginsburg Hospital, formerly known as Coney Island Hospital, sustained significant damage during 2012’s Superstorm Sandy. More than 220 patients had to be evacuated during the storm, in part because the hospital’s ground-level emergency generators had to be shut off for several hours to prevent further flood damage. While the hospital became fully operational again a few months later, major upgrades were needed to better prepare the facility in the event of a future flooding event.
STV, on behalf of the New York City Economic Development Corporation, and in collaboration with Group PMX, served as the program manager for extensive improvements at the South Brooklyn Health Ruth Bader Ginsburg Hospital. The new, 11-floor acute care tower features an emergency department on the second floor, a modern surgical suite with eight operating rooms, and a clinical laboratory. Designed to withstand 500-year flood levels, a resilient flood wall encircles the entire hospital complex, which is also outfitted with upgraded storm and sanitary drainage pumps.
The award-winning project is part of New York City’s expansive capital improvement plan to make its healthcare facilities, including four sites owned by NYC Health + Hospitals that were damaged during Superstorm Sandy, more resilient.
