NYCHA Cypress Hills Boiler and Domestic Hot Water Heater Replacements

STV supported a $35 million heating and hot water system replacement project at NYCHA’s Cypress Hills Houses in Brooklyn, improving service reliability for more than 1,400 residential units across 15 buildings. As NYCHA works to modernize aging infrastructure, STV provided existing‑conditions reporting, full design services, construction documents and construction administration for new boiler plants, gas‑fired domestic hot water heaters and dedicated equipment rooms.

What challenges did STV address?

A primary challenge was replacing critical heating and hot water systems without disrupting service to residents, especially during the winter months. The work also involved aging underground petroleum storage tanks requiring environmental remediation design and careful sequencing. The buildings’ continuous occupancy demanded a safe, coordinated approach that maintained utilities while enabling phased construction.

What solutions did STV deliver?

STV developed a detailed phasing strategy that allowed heating and hot water service to remain uninterrupted during equipment changeouts. The firm designed new boiler rooms, upgraded mechanical and plumbing systems and replaced outdated heat exchangers with more efficient gas‑fired hot water heaters. STV also delivered environmental remediation design for the removal of two underground petroleum storage tanks and provided construction administration services to ensure compliance and quality.

How does this project benefit the community?

The upgrades improve system reliability, energy efficiency and long‑term resilience for residents. By modernizing major building systems and eliminating outdated equipment, the project strengthens comfort, safety and operational performance across the Cypress Hills Houses.
