At a symbolic height of 1,776 feet, One World Trade Center (One WTC) stands as the iconic centerpiece of the rebuilt World Trade Center campus – an enduring testament to the resilience, strength and spirit of New Yorkers. Encompassing more than 3.6 million square feet, the skyscraper features state-of-the-art office space, as well as restaurants, broadcast facilities and a world-renowned observation deck, all wrapped within a striking glass façade that reflects the city’s skyline and its forward-looking identity.
What challenges did STV address?
The construction of One WTC required navigating an extraordinary set of logistical, technical and symbolic demands. As the most prominent structure on the World Trade Center site, the building needed to incorporate advanced life‑safety systems, enhanced structural resilience, modern sustainability features and stringent New York City Building Code requirements. STV’s role demanded exceptional coordination among design teams, regulatory agencies and construction partners so that the project met the highest standards of safety, security and performance.
What solutions did STV deliver?
As the program manager and owner’s representative on behalf of The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, STV oversaw the full design and construction process for One WTC. The team coordinated multidisciplinary consultants, tracked project milestones, facilitated communication among stakeholders and verified adherence to the complex safety, structural and sustainability criteria. The result is one of the “greenest” skyscrapers in the world, achieving LEED® Gold certification and becoming the tallest LEED‑certified building in the Western Hemisphere.
How does this project benefit the region?
One WTC has become an economic, cultural and emotional anchor for Lower Manhattan. It supports thousands of jobs, attracts millions of visitors annually and reinforces the city’s global role as a center for commerce and innovation. Its sustainable design reduces environmental impact while its advanced life‑safety systems set new benchmarks for high‑rise development. More than a building, One WTC serves as a symbol of renewal for New York City and beyond.
