Located at the base of the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge – Mount Pleasant’s direct link to Charleston – the high-profile intersection of Coleman Boulevard (South Carolina Highway 703) with Patriots Point Road and Magrath Darby Boulevard serves as a primary gateway for both residents and visitors entering and exiting Mount Pleasant. It provides access to key attractions like the Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum featuring the USS Yorktown (CV-10) aircraft carrier, a waterfront park, a golf course and a high-density, mixed-use development.
STV provided comprehensive design services for roadway widening and associated intersection geometry enhancements to increase vehicular traffic capacity and improve connectivity for pedestrians and cyclists. The project scope also included public transit upgrades, with two new covered bus shelters installed. As the prime consultant, STV was responsible for roadway design, traffic engineering, stormwater management, environmental services, utility coordination and construction administration, with geotechnical design support from Terracon.
Key multimodal enhancements of the new intersection include:
- Unique signage and pavement markings facilitate bike and pedestrian connectivity to the Arthur Ravenel Bridge multi-use path.
- An enhanced walkway that is part of Mount Pleasant Way, a multimodal path network linking key areas of the town, including parks, schools, neighborhoods and commercial zones.
- The first “bike box” in Mount Pleasant—a safety feature enabling a two-stage left turn for bicyclists traveling from westbound Coleman Boulevard to Patriots Point Road, eliminating the need for bicyclists to cross two lanes of heavy traffic.
- Two brand–new bus stops with solar power.
- Pervious pavers with an underlying basin to improve drainage and resilience by holding and filtering stormwater.
