Railroad Bridge over Crabtree Creek

Since 1927, a single trestle bridge has carried both freight and passenger rail service across Crabtree Creek in Morrisville, North Carolina, forming a key link in a heavily traveled regional rail corridor. To increase capacity and reduce conflicts with a nearby greenway trail, Norfolk Southern advanced a $9.8 million initiative to relocate and replace the aging structure. STV provided construction management and inspection services for the two‑phase program, along with utility coordination and pay estimation support. The project was delivered through a partnership between the North Carolina Railroad Company and the Town of Morrisville.

What challenges did STV address?

The active rail corridor required continuous service throughout construction, which demanded meticulous staging for track relocation and bridge installation. Flooding of Crabtree Creek – reaching depths of up to 9 feet – increased the risk to field activities. The project also required careful environmental stewardship, as the site sits within a sensitive wetland habitat for endangered bog turtles, requiring unique protection measures during demolition and construction.

What solutions did STV deliver?

STV coordinated with railroad operators, local stakeholders and environmental agencies to sequence work safely and efficiently. The team oversaw track realignment, temporary shoring installation and the demolition of the existing trestle bridge. STV recommended protective perimeter fencing to safeguard bog turtle habitat and ensured all construction operations were compliant with environmental commitments. The new structure was designed with capacity for a future second track to support long‑term corridor growth.

How does this project benefit the community?

The new bridge supports increased freight and passenger capacity, improves regional rail reliability and enhances safety near residential neighborhoods. The completed underpass also restores full access to the greenway, creating a safer, continuous route for pedestrians and cyclists.
