Reconstruction of Route 9A

Route 9A is a major artery into Lower Manhattan that was badly damaged during the 9/11 attacks. Upon reopening in 2002, it featured two fewer traffic lanes and a temporary pedestrian crossing to Battery Park City. The $400 million reconstruction of the roadway enhanced Lower Manhattan by restoring the highway’s traffic capacity and improving pedestrian circulation throughout the area.

STV, in joint venture, provided construction management services to the New York State Department of Transportation. STV’s team performed construction coordination, staging and scheduling strategies to allow concurrent work on the 9A project and on each of the other high-profile projects within the Route 9A work zone, including the National September 11 Memorial & Museum. STV’s efforts ensured that essential utilities were constructed and construction access was maintained within shared work zones.

This significant effort received a Diamond Award from the New York Chapter of the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) and was also honored by ACEC’s national chapter.

A reconstructed roadway serves as another significant effort in the redevelopment of Lower Manhattan.
