The Wentworth Institute of Technology’s (WIT) Douglas D. Schumann Library & Learning Commons underwent a transformative renovation to create a modern, technology‑driven hub for students and faculty. As the owner’s project manager, STV guided this expansive upgrade, overseeing selective demolition and abatement, full mechanical and electrical replacements, window upgrades and comprehensive improvements to lighting, acoustics and ADA accessibility. The revitalized library now offers flexible study areas, collaborative spaces and a new compact shelving system to better support WIT’s academic mission.
What challenges did STV address?
WIT sought to fully modernize its aging library while maintaining partial building occupancy and ensuring continuity of academic services. The project required complex coordination among campus leaders, faculty and students, alongside careful handling and protection of the library’s collection. Additional challenges included phasing work around building operations, upgrading all major building systems and relocating the library to temporary quarters without disrupting campus life.
What solutions did STV deliver?
STV partnered with WIT to select the project’s designer and contractor and provided comprehensive owner’s project management and move management services. The team facilitated stakeholder engagement at every phase to align decisions with budget, schedule and operational needs. STV coordinated the relocation and safeguarding of the library’s materials, managed the temporary library set‑up in a dormitory and oversaw new furniture procurement –from delivery through installation – all while ensuring construction progressed safely within an occupied academic building.
How does this project benefit the WIT community?
The renewed Douglas D. Schumann Library & Learning Commons strengthens WIT’s learning environment by offering flexible, collaborative and technology‑rich spaces designed for modern pedagogy. Enhanced accessibility, upgraded building systems and improved comfort and performance create a more inclusive and resilient academic resource. The project supports student success, faculty innovation and the long-term vitality of one of the institution’s most essential campus assets.
