Ferris State University’s Rock Cafe underwent a complete transformation that shifted the dining experience from a traditional cafeteria model to an open marketplace concept. STV provided architectural, interior design and civil and structural engineering services to modernize the space and create a more transparent food production environment centered on freshness and made‑to‑order preparation. A key design move relocated back‑of‑house operations into several display cooking stations within the dining area, allowing students to watch meals being prepared in real time.
What challenges did STV address?
The university wanted a dining facility that supported higher throughput, modern service models and a more interactive dining experience. STV needed to reconfigure a dated layout, integrate accessible routes across multiple entrances and upgrade infrastructure systems while minimizing disruption to campus life. Improving sustainability and reducing long‑term energy use were also major goals.
What solutions did STV deliver?
STV redesigned the cafe with open cooking venues, expanded seating and a new 2,000‑square‑foot lobby topped with a glass atrium for natural light. The seating capacity increased from 400 to more than 640, with enclosed areas for small groups. Accessibility upgrades included new ramps, restrooms and improved circulation. Sustainable features included enhanced exterior insulation, efficient glazing systems and extended southern canopies that provide shading and reduce cooling loads.
How does this project benefit the community?
The renovated Rock Cafe offers students a vibrant, flexible dining destination that encourages social connection and supports modern service models. Energy‑efficient systems reduce operational costs while the open‑kitchen concept enhances transparency and food quality.
