Sandy Hook School

Understanding how design standards need to evolve to support school safety and community healing was a central feature of STV’s services for the construction of the new Sandy Hook School in Newtown, CT. STV provided owner’s representative services for the new, 87,000-square-foot school complete with a state-of-the-art security system and eco-friendly design. To accommodate the approximately 500 Pre-K through fourth grade students, the new school features 23 classrooms, 11 specialty classrooms and two treehouse spaces with architectural elements that evoke Newton’s natural beauty.

Made possible by a $50 million grant from the State of Connecticut, the project was constructed in 18 months thanks to a close collaboration between STV and Svigals + Partners Architects, the designer, Consigli Construction, the construction manager at risk, and the Newton community. STV provided consistent direction of the town’s preferences in design, schedule and budget.

Maintaining compliance with Connecticut’s Office of School Facilities, the firm kept all the requirements of the state and the newly adapted security requirements at the forefront of the design.

This impactful program was honored by Engineering News-Record and Building Design+Construction magazines and received the special “Power of Community Award” from the Construction Management Association of America.
