The Saugatuck River Bridge is a 118-year-old movable bascule bridge that carries four rail tracks over the Saugatuck River in Fairfield County, CT. Replacement of the bridge has become necessary to enhance the safety and reliability of rail service and reduce service disruptions; offer enhanced operational flexibility and ease of maintenance; increase capacity and efficiency of rail transportation, including Metro-North Railroad and Amtrak, along the Northeast Corridor, the nation’s busiest rail corridor; and ensure the economic well-being of the region by maintaining a major link to the core of the New York Metropolitan region.
STV’s funding and grants advisory team partnered with the Connecticut Department of Transportation to support an application for a $23.2 million Federal Rail Administration Federal-State Partnership for Intercity Passenger Rail grant. This program highlights capital projects that are consistent with the Northeast Corridor Project Inventory.
The funding will be used toward the development of a replacement plan for the bridge, including an environmental review and preliminary engineering.
