More than 75 years after its initial opening, Kutztown University’s Schaeffer Auditorium underwent a transformative renovation to elevate its performing arts spaces for modern use. STV served as the owner’s representative and construction manager for the comprehensive renovation of the existing 32,000‑square‑foot facility and the construction of a new 23,000‑square‑foot L‑shaped addition. The project upgraded the historic three‑level auditorium with new stage rigging, theater lighting, AV systems, motorized acoustic banners, restored windows and doors and new fixed seating that expanded capacity from 755 to 826.
What challenges did STV address?
Kutztown University sought to modernize an aging performance venue while preserving its architectural character and minimizing disruptions to campus operations. The existing building required extensive interior and exterior upgrades, including specialized acoustic and lighting enhancements. A major expansion was also needed to accommodate growing music and performing arts programs, all while managing complex construction sequencing and maintaining safety on an active campus.
