Spring Creek Educational Campus

At the heart of the Spring Creek neighborhood in Brooklyn, NY, the Spring Creek Educational Campus sits as one of the largest and tallest structures in the area. The 154,000-square-foot campus features a four-story structure that houses two 550-student intermediate/high schools and a school for 100 students with disabilities.

STV served as architect- and engineer-of-record for the school designed to meet NYC Green Schools Guide Rating System’s sustainability certification requirements. Natural light pours into all teaching and public spaces, while exterior finishes and rooftops boast recycled, sustainable elements.

Built on a former marsh with limited bearing capacity, STV’s design team deployed the vibro-replacement technique, placing 1,554 crushed stone columns 50 feet deep throughout the site. As the first use of this technology at a New York City Schools Construction Authority (NYCSCA) project, it resulted in client cost savings of over $1 million.

The space-efficient building houses numerous program spaces, including classrooms, science labs and demonstration rooms, technology rooms, music and choral rooms, a library, administrative offices, a gymnasium, a 550-seat auditorium and two cafeterias with a common kitchen. The firm designed the school to double as a community space, making the gym and auditorium accessible from the school’s lobby.

In addition to enhancing the educational experience in the community, the school’s design was honored by the American Council of Engineering Companies of New York and was declared a “Best Project” in New York by Engineering News-Record.
