Sound Transit’s University Link extension delivers a 3.2‑mile underground light rail connection linking Downtown Seattle, Capitol Hill and the University of Washington. STV provided construction management for systems across the extension, supporting the delivery of new tunnels, updated station systems and stronger integration with the broader Central Link line.
What challenges did STV address?
The project required incorporating new systems into both newly constructed underground stations and an active rail network already spanning 13 stations between Downtown Seattle and SeaTac Airport. Managing multiple contractor teams – including one general contractor/construction manager and three electrical contractor/construction manager teams – demanded strict coordination. Integrating new hardware and software with existing wayside equipment along the active alignment also required significant testing, staging and interface management.
What solutions did STV deliver?
STV oversaw the installation, testing and integration of key systems for the extension. The team managed contractors responsible for delivering wayside equipment, communications, train control and other essential systems within the new tunnels and stations. STV also coordinated systemwide interface efforts to ensure seamless operation between the University Link tunnels and the existing Central Link alignment.
