The Virginia Railway Express (VRE) Lifecycle Overhaul and Upgrade Facility is a state‑of‑the‑art maintenance complex designed to ensure VRE’s locomotives and railcars operate safely and reliably throughout their full service life. More than a decade in development, the new 33,500‑square‑foot facility represents the largest single capital investment in VRE’s history. STV, in partnership with Gannett Fleming, served as the lead designer for the facility, delivering a modern, efficient and technologically advanced space for ongoing maintenance, heavy overhauls and system upgrades.
What challenges did STV address?
VRE required a facility capable of supporting the specialized, long‑term maintenance needs of both existing and future rolling stock. The project needed modern equipment, flexible workspaces and advanced systems that could accommodate evolving locomotive and railcar technologies. The facility also had to optimize workflow, safety and efficiency for maintenance crews while supporting uninterrupted commuter rail operations.
What solutions did STV deliver?
STV designed a comprehensive overhaul facility equipped with a drop table for removing locomotives and railcar trucks and wheelsets, a wheel‑truing machine for re‑profiling wheels, and an overhead bridge crane with two lift points and two tracks capable of holding up to four vehicles. The design integrates industrial, architectural, mechanical, electrical and fire protection systems tailored to a modern fleet maintenance environment. The facility’s layout also supports future technology changes and additional advanced equipment.
