Worcester County Medical and Intake Facility

The Worcester County Jail and House of Corrections provides temporary housing for detainees awaiting arraignments, hearings and sentencings, along with longer‑term detainee housing. After identifying significant space and operational challenges in its existing intake and medical areas, the Massachusetts Division of Capital Asset Management and Maintenance (DCAMM) partnered with STV to design a modern, efficient medical and intake unit that supports both staff and detainees.

What challenges did STV address?

The County needed a solution that would streamline intake processing, expand medical capacity and improve conditions for detainees, all while maintaining safe and functional operations. Limited available space, outdated layouts and increasing daily throughput required a design that could handle approximately 60 detainees per day, operate around the clock and support regional police departments during nights, weekends and holidays.

What solutions did STV deliver?

During a comprehensive feasibility study, STV developed four conceptual alternatives before DCAMM selected the preferred design. The resulting two‑story, light‑filled facility features separate medical treatment and intake processing areas – improving efficiency, privacy, and safety. The new design provides housing for up to 28 intake detainees and 26 medical beds, ensuring proper care and supervision. STV delivered architectural, civil, electrical, mechanical/HVAC and interior design services, aligning the building’s functionality with modern correctional standards.

How does this project benefit the region?

The upgraded medical and intake facility supports staff with more efficient workflows and improves the experience and well-being of detainees. It strengthens the County’s ability to manage daily intake demand, enhances medical care delivery, and functions as a reliable regional resource for local law enforcement.
