As part of our ongoing commitment to improving mobility and access in South Carolina, STV recently celebrated the completion of the Patriots Point Gateway Intersection Improvement Project in Mount Pleasant. This project is transforming the area by providing smoother, safer access routes and new mobility options that make the community more navigable and connected.
Located at the base of the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge – Mount Pleasant’s direct link to Charleston – the high-profile intersection of Coleman Boulevard (South Carolina Highway 703) with Patriots Point Road and Magrath Darby Boulevard serves as a primary gateway for both residents and visitors entering and exiting Mount Pleasant. It provides access to key attractions like the Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum which features the USS Yorktown (CV-10) aircraft carrier, a waterfront park, a golf course and a high-density, mixed-use development.
As the prime consultant on this project, STV took on the full scope of design services for roadway widening and associated intersection geometry enhancements to increase traffic capacity and overall safety. In addition to enhancing vehicular traffic flow, we prioritized connectivity for pedestrians and cyclists by integrating new infrastructure for safe, multimodal travel. The project scope also included public transit upgrades, with two new covered bus shelters installed. Our team’s responsibilities spanned roadway design, traffic engineering, stormwater management, environmental services, utility coordination and construction administration, with geotechnical design support from Terracon.
The new intersection includes several key multimodal enhancements:
- Unique signage and pavement markings facilitating bike and pedestrian connectivity to the Arthur Ravenel Bridge multiuse path.
- An enhanced walkway that is part of Mount Pleasant Way, a multimodal path network linking key areas of the town, including parks, schools, neighborhoods and commercial zones.
- The first “bike box” in Mount Pleasant – a safety feature enabling a two-stage left turn for bicyclists traveling from westbound Coleman Boulevard to Patriots Point Road, eliminating the need for bicyclists to cross two lanes of heavy traffic.
- Two brand–new covered bus stops with solar power for enhanced transit access.
- Pervious pavers with an underlying basin to improve drainage and resilience by holding and filtering stormwater.
The project underscores STV’s commitment to enhancing local infrastructure by addressing key aspects of traffic management, safety and accessibility. The redesigned intersection not only improves the flow of vehicular traffic but also makes it significantly easier and safer for pedestrians and cyclists to navigate this vital gateway to the area’s sights. By creating a more welcoming and efficient intersection, the project enriches both the aesthetic appeal and functional accessibility of the space, connecting residents and visitors with opportunities and services throughout Mount Pleasant.
Since 2017, STV has worked closely with the Town of Mount Pleasant to bring this vision to life. Through an on-call engineering contract, we have continued to support the town’s goals, building trust and strengthening our relationship across multiple projects, including this significant intersection improvement.
Throughout South Carolina and beyond, STV is one of the nation’s top transportation design and engineering firms, providing innovative solutions that prioritize smart growth and sustainable development. Our work spans a wide range of roadway and infrastructure projects, including complex interchanges in both urban and rural settings, all with a focus on integrating traffic management, safety and community needs. As we expand our presence in the Carolinas, STV remains dedicated to creating context-sensitive, resilient infrastructure that balances functionality, aesthetic appeal and preservation of community values.
