Modernizing Connecticut’s Rail Bridges: STV’s Partnership with Amtrak Enhances Northeast Corridor

The Northeast Corridor’s rail infrastructure requires continuous modernization to maintain its position as one of the country’s busiest routes. As engineering consultants for Amtrak, STV is playing a key role in several important infrastructure projects in Connecticut that will enhance rail service reliability and safety along this vital transportation artery.

Our most significant undertaking is the Connecticut River Bridge replacement project between Old Saybrook and Old Lyme, Connecticut. STV, as a subconsultant to AECOM, is providing construction management services, including construction inspection and office engineering. The project, which was awarded by Amtrak to the O&G/Tutor Perini joint venture, will replace the aging movable bridge with a modern structure designed to support high-speed rail operations while enhancing the Northeast Corridor’s connectivity.

Our long-standing expertise in bridge rehabilitations and other rail infrastructure enhancements has uniquely positioned us to address one of Amtrak’s most crucial needs: maintaining and upgrading its vast network of bridges to support its operations.

This collaboration also demonstrates how STV’s relationship with Amtrak begins with a local focus – understanding that the key to a successful national partnership lies in strong local presence and knowledge. Beyond the Connecticut River Bridge replacement, STV has been entrusted by Amtrak to support a diverse range of projects throughout the Nutmeg State, from structural reinforcements and weatherproofing upgrades to safety enhancements on existing bridges.

Under our current master services agreement with Amtrak’s New England Division, we’re currently engaged in or have recently completed:

  • Connecticut River Bridge Span 1 Rehabilitation: At Windsor Locks, we completed a complex engineering project involving truss expansion roller bearings and stringer bearings replacement, performed substructure rehabilitation and provided a crucial jacking design. Our innovative rail bridge engineering solutions enabled completion within 35 hours, significantly under the 55-hour track outage limitation.
  • Millstone Brook Culvert: In Waterford, we are demonstrating our comprehensive approach to rail infrastructure maintenance. We’re conducting detailed engineering assessments, including site surveys, soil borings, geotechnical reporting, hydrologic/hydraulic analysis and in-depth inspections. We’ve already provided short-term recommendations to address immediate concerns while we develop long-term solutions for this tidally affected rail culvert.
  • Meriden Rail Culvert: InMeriden, we’re displaying our expertise in rail culvert rehabilitation and replacement efforts. Our team is performing thorough site surveys, soil borings and geotechnical assessments, as well as hydrologic and hydraulic analyses to ensure long-term structural integrity and optimal performance.
  • Mill River Bridge Enhancement: In New Haven, we’re performing comprehensive site surveys, soil borings, geotechnical reporting and hydrologic/hydraulic analysis.
  • Stonington Retaining Wall: Our work in Stonington demonstrates our versatility in rail infrastructure, extending beyond bridges to encompass all key support structures along the Northeast Corridor.

Our successful delivery of these projects establishes STV as a go-to partner for Amtrak in Connecticut. By combining local expertise with advanced engineering solutions, we’re helping to create a more resilient and efficient rail network that serves both Connecticut communities and the entire Northeast Corridor transportation system.
