STV’s Austin team recently hosted engineering students from The University of Texas at Austin as part of the university’s Engineering Externship Program, providing students with hands-on exposure to professional engineering practice.
During the visit, students received guided tours of the construction sites of two active STV-led projects. The group visited the Texas Department of Transportation’s Capital Express South, where STV is serving as the lead engineering firm on the $548 million project. The group observed ongoing construction activities and learned how design, construction and project management come together on large-scale transportation improvements.
Students then toured the South Austin Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant, where STV led the design, bid and construction phase services for the rehabilitation of two of the facility’s three treatment trains at the City of Austin’s second-largest wastewater treatment plant. The visit provided insight into the technical and operational considerations involved in maintaining critical water infrastructure while facilities remain in service.
The externship also included time at STV’s Austin office, where students met with engineers and project staff to learn about career paths, interdisciplinary teamwork and the skills needed to succeed in the industry. Through informal conversations and structured discussions, students gained insight into how engineering decisions are made from planning through construction.
“We appreciate opportunities like this to engage with local students and share real project experience,” said Eric Ploch, PE, vice president at STV. “It’s an important part of staying connected to the future of the profession.”
