Four STV Projects Win ENR Regional Awards

Published

Engineering News-Record (ENR) magazine recently announced the winners of its 2023 Regional Best Projects of the Year program with four STV projects from across the United States receiving recognition:  Newark Liberty International Airport Terminal A in New Jersey; LIRR Elmont UBS Arena Station on Long Island, NY; NYC H+H Ruth Bader Ginsburg Hospital in Brooklyn; and the MARC Riverside Heavy Maintenance Facility in Baltimore.

The awards were announced on ENR’s website and will appear in ENR New York’s and ENR MidAtlantic’s November issues.

Newark Airport

Newark Liberty International Airport’s (EWR) new Terminal A earned the Award of Merit in ENR NY’s Airport/Transit category.

STV served as architect/engineer-of-record on the $2.7 billion Newark Airport Terminal A redevelopment project, designing the new three-level, 1-million-square-foot, 33-gate domestic terminal, the pedestrian bridge that connects the terminal to a consolidated rental car facility, and a generator building.

“We’re proud of the STV team who successfully delivered the largest design-build infrastructure project in New Jersey state history,” said Michael Meloni, P.E., project director for the new EWR terminal.

“The continued recognition of the project is a testament to not only Terminal A’s impact on the New York and New Jersey region but also to the entire project team’s exceptional work in transforming Terminal A into a modern marvel,” said Ashraf Basta, P.E., CCM, LEED AP BD+C, DBIA, vice president and deputy project director.

Additionally, the project was also recently honored by the Delaware Valley Association of Structural Engineers (DVASE), earning the 2023 Excellence in Structural Engineering award, as well as the Architecture Construction Engineering (ACE) Mentor Program Project of the Year award. The project has received numerous awards since opening in January 2023, including the 2023 Project of the Year by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) New Jersey Section.

LIRR Elmont Station

The Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) Elmont UBS Arena Station also earned the ENR NY Award of Merit in the Airport/Transit category.

The new station connects LIRR to the Queens and Elmont communities and provides access to the UBS Arena, home of the New York Islanders hockey team. As architect/engineer-of-record, STV developed the station’s final architectural, structural systems and civil designs.

In addition to ENR NY Best Projects, the project also earned the New York State Society of Professional Engineers – Long Island Chapter’s 2023 Outstanding Engineering Achievement Award. NYSSPE and ENR NY recognized STV and the project’s contractor, Judlau Consulting/OHLA USA, Inc.

“We’re thrilled that ENR and NYSSPE honored the project and the team, who delivered the first new LIRR station in almost 50 years,” said Alexander Napoli, P.E., vice president and senior project manager who led STV’s team. “With an aggressive schedule, we were able to achieve major milestones despite the pandemic. The project was a collaborative effort between our design-build partners and the MTA. It drew from STV’s regional and national experts from across the firm.”

RBG Hospital

NYC H+H Ruth Bader Ginsburg Hospital, which opened to patients in May 2023, received an Award of Merit within ENR NY’s Healthcare category.

STV’s Construction Management team serves as program manager for the project, administering $992 million in Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for improvements at the hospital, which sustained severe damage during 2012’s Superstorm Sandy. The hospital features a new, 350,000-square-foot resilient tower that houses the hospital’s Emergency Department.

“For over five years, STV’s team has been working extremely hard on this complex and exciting project to replace the hospital. We’re very excited that ENR has recognized the entire team and the project—the first new public hospital to be constructed in New York City in over 40 years,” said David Kelly, vice president and project executive of construction management northeast. “In addition to our PM and PC services, STV managed procurement for all medical equipment and FF&E for the new hospital, as well as managing the transition services needed to move every medical unit and department from the existing hospital into the new tower.”

MARC Riverside facility

The new MARC Riverside Heavy Maintenance Building in Baltimore, MD received ENR Mid-Atlantic’s Award of Merit within the Airport/Transit category.

STV served as the lead designer for the $48.3 million construction management at risk (CMAR) project, which provides the Maryland Department of Transportation Maryland Transit Administration (MDOT MTA) with a 32,113-square-foot facility to maintain MARC train operations.

Designed to accommodate MARC’s new Siemens Chargers, the building houses largescale industrial equipment which includes a drop table, a first-of-its-kind Stanray M3 underfloor wheel truing machine and a 30-ton overhead bridge crane that will streamline repair times, increase on-time train performance, and provide a local maintenance facility (previously, MARC trains were sent to Washington, DC for maintenance).

“The design and delivery of the project is attributed to successful collaboration between STV’s multiple operating groups, who came together as one to deliver the project for MDOT MTA. The design is a benchmark for future MDOT MTA facilities and setting a new standard for functional, people-oriented spaces in the industrial sector,” said Ryan Barth, P.E., project manager.

STV was also previously honored by MDOT MTA for this project with a Certificate of Achievement.
