STV recently joined the U.S. Air Force (USAF) at a ceremonial “Golden Sledgehammer” event in San Antonio, TX, marking the beginning of the demolition phase for a major renovation project.
The project entails the complete renovation of a three-story, 44,500-square-foot building dating back to 1931. The scope includes a complete interior demolition and fit-out for various workspaces, alongside an exterior refresh.
STV is providing comprehensive design services, including architectural, structural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection and interior design, as well as post-design support through construction administration services.
“This project presented unique challenges due to the building’s historical significance and the security requirements,” said STV project architect Aaron Booth, AIA, NCARB. “Adapting this century-old structure required meticulous planning for a comprehensive interior reconstruction to maximize space efficiency while preserving its historical integrity.”
STV has been supporting this project’s development for nearly two years and is set to finalize bid submissions shortly, with demolition now underway, new construction scheduled to begin in early fall and substantial project completion slated for next summer.
“This marks our fourth controlled project in partnership with the Port of San Antonio, and our second major controlled facility with the USAF in San Antonio,” said Steven Rothenberger, Assoc. AIA, LEED AP BD+C, senior project manager and director of secure facilities at STV. “It’s a privilege to collaborate once again with the USAF, Port San Antonio and Mazzuca Contracting on such a pivotal project. This facility plays a critical role for the USAF both now and in the future, and we are honored to contribute to its revitalization and enhancement.”
Both Rothenberger and Booth attended the ceremony in person. All team members had a chance to swing the sledgehammer and contribute to the demolition.
