STV is celebrating the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority’s (MBTA) Quincy Bus Maintenance Facility, which was honored by sustainable infrastructure leaders with the New England Water Environment Association’s (NEWEA) 2025 Green Steps Award.
The Green Steps Award – which was recently presented at NEWEA’s Annual Conference & Exhibit in Boston – spotlights organizations and projects that demonstrate leadership in sustainable practices and deliver measurable environmental, economic and community benefits. The MBTA’s Quincy facility was recognized for its visionary design that supports the transition to a zero-emission bus fleet and elevates sustainability standards for transportation infrastructure.

“This award highlights collaboration and vision in delivering infrastructure that not only meets current operational needs but also establishes a standard for sustainable transit solutions in the region,” said Steven Packard, AIA, NCARB, senior architect and project manager at STV.
STV designed and engineered the Quincy Bus Maintenance Facility, the first of its kind in Massachusetts, built to support the MBTA’s fleet electrification efforts. The 350,000-square-foot facility replaces an aging shop and provides space for washing, maintaining, repairing and charging up to 120 battery-electric buses (BEBs).
Sustainable features include reclaimed water for bus washing, stormwater treatment, a solar-ready design, low-emissions systems and recycled materials, all contributing to the MBTA’s climate goals and earning Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold certification.
“This milestone reflects the MBTA’s commitment to sustainability, environmental stewardship and long-term operational efficiency,” said Preethi Sreeraj, PE, sustainability and resilience administrator for the project. “The team tracked every point, updated the design to meet LEED goals, coordinated with Green Business Certification Inc. (GBCI) and coordinated with the construction team to secure the expected Construction Phase points.”
STV’s design integrates advanced electric vehicle infrastructure, sustainable resilience strategies and future-ready systems to enhance safety, operational efficiency and environmental performance. The team also addressed fire protection challenges unique to electric vehicles to enhance long-term safety and resilience in facility operations.
“The NEWEA Green Steps Award recognizes the project team’s dedication to sustainability and partnership,” said Marian Barth, PE, vice president and Boston area manager at STV. “This facility accelerates the MBTA’s transition toward a zero-emission bus fleet and sets a new standard for environmentally conscious transit infrastructure.”
