The Patriots Point Gateway Intersection Improvements Project, a transformative transportation and multimodal infrastructure initiative in the Town of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, has been recognized as State Finalist at the American Council of Engineering Companies of South Carolina (ACEC-SC) Engineering Excellence Awards.

Located at the base of the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge, the intersection of Coleman Boulevard (SC Highway 703), Patriots Point Road and Magrath Darby Boulevard serves as a highly visible gateway for residents, commuters and visitors traveling to Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum, the USS Yorktown, Memorial Waterfront Park and Mount Pleasant’s growing waterfront district. For years, the intersection was challenged by congestion, safety concerns and limited multimodal connectivity.

“This project improves traffic flow while creating a safer, more welcoming gateway that reflects Mount Pleasant’s values,” said Andrew Fisher, PE, vice president and area manager for South Carolina at STV. “Being recognized by ACEC-SC is especially meaningful because it highlights the collaboration, innovation and community focus that defined this work.”

Bike lane signage and new bike lanes

On behalf of the Town of Mount Pleasant, STV served as the prime consultant, leading the project from concept through completion. The firm provided roadway and traffic design, drainage and stormwater engineering, environmental permitting, utility coordination and construction administration. Working within sensitive coastal constraints and state-owned roadways, the team delivered a context-sensitive solution without expanding the intersection’s footprint.

The completed project introduced several first-of-their-kind features for Mount Pleasant, including the Town’s first bicycle bike box to improve cyclist safety, solar-powered transit shelters, green infrastructure for stormwater management and innovative utility coordination solutions that avoided costly relocations. Optimized signal timing and new turn lanes have significantly reduced congestion while improving pedestrian and bicycle access.

Completed on schedule and within budget, the Patriots Point Gateway now stands as a model for multimodal, resilient and sustainable roadway design – and a clear example of engineering excellence in service of the public.
