New York Team Hosts Salvadori Center Career Development Event for High School Students

Members of STV’s New York team recently hosted a group of students from the Williamsburg High School for Architecture and Design for a group discussion about pursuing careers in architecture and engineering.

The visit was arranged by the prestigious Salvadori Center, an organization that partners with schools to teach K–12 students about math, science, and the arts through collaborative, hands-on, project-based lessons tied to the buildings, bridges, parks and communities that surround them. New York Structural Engineering Director Chris Cerino, P.E., F.SEI, DBIA, is a member of the Salvadori Center’s Board of Directors.

STV’s presenters covered a variety of topics, including sustainability, resilience, architectural design, structural, plumbing/fire protection, civil, and environmental engineering.

“There is so much information available for students to research endless career opportunities, but it can be extremely overwhelming to navigate and try to comprehend at that age,” said Lauren Alger, P.E., ENV SP, sustainability manager and civil engineer. “This event helped them to understand the daily operations of engineers and architects at our firm. Our team also explained how their career paths evolved after they received their STEM college degrees. By the end of the presentation, many students asked fantastic questions and we encouraged them to explore the built world around them on their way home.”
