NYPD 9th Precinct Building

The NYPD’s former 9th Precinct station house in Lower Manhattan, a Depression‑era structure, no longer supported the operational, safety and community needs of a modern police force. To replace the outdated facility, the New York City Department of Design and Construction selected STV to develop the facilities program and architectural design for a new eight‑story, 39,000‑square‑foot precinct. The resulting building features state‑of‑the‑art security systems, energy‑efficient equipment and modern life safety systems that improve comfort, functionality and public engagement.

What challenges did STV address?

The original facility lacked adequate space, efficient systems and the critical security features needed for today’s policing. Located in a dense historic neighborhood, the project required a design that met modern performance standards while respecting the architectural character of the surrounding community. Preserving the building’s original façade elements also introduced structural and historic‑preservation challenges.

What solutions did STV deliver?

STV designed a contemporary two‑story lobby that enhances transparency and strengthens the connection between the public and the precinct. The team disassembled, restored and reinstalled the original façade, integrating new first‑floor entrances, windows and graphics that remain contextual with the neighborhood. STV also provided full architectural, structural, mechanical, electrical and preservation design services to upgrade systems and expand operational capacity.

How does this project benefit the community?

The new station house improves public safety, enhances officer working conditions and contributes to the neighborhood with a modernized facility that preserves historic character. It provides a secure, energy‑efficient and community‑focused civic building that supports the NYPD’s mission today and into the future.
