The Bronx Family and Criminal Courthouse underwent a transformative multi‑phase interior renovation to address long‑standing operational and circulation challenges within this heavily used civic facility. As construction manager, STV led the effort to modernize the building’s interior spaces, improve the movement of people through the courthouse and support a better experience for staff, visitors and stakeholders.
What challenges did STV address?
The courthouse’s original layout created persistent congestion – from narrow, crowded corridors to overburdened screening areas. These bottlenecks caused excessive delays and limited the building’s ability to efficiently manage high daily volumes of public visitors and staff. Additionally, the presence of outdated infrastructure and asbestos contamination posed health, safety and operational concerns. The Dormitory Authority of the State of New York (DASNY) initiated this renovation to create a safer, more functional and more responsive justice facility.
What solutions did STV deliver?
Serving as construction manager, STV provided comprehensive project coordination, scheduling and financial management. The improvements included enhancements to the New York Police Department arrest‑to‑arraignment area, renovation of Family and Criminal Court entrances, courtroom upgrades and modernized office interiors. STV also oversaw asbestos abatement and managed all phased construction within the fully occupied facility. By coordinating closely with DASNY and courthouse stakeholders, STV ensured continuous operations while executing strategic relocations and swing‑space reconfigurations.
How does this project benefit the community?
The renovated courthouse now offers streamlined circulation, reduced wait times and an improved overall experience for the public and justice system personnel. The upgrades create a safer, more accessible environment that supports timely legal proceedings and enhances public confidence in the justice process. By modernizing a critical civic institution, the project strengthens community infrastructure and helps deliver more efficient public services to Bronx residents.
