The Adult Behavioral Health Center at the Bronx Psychiatric Center is the first new adult inpatient facility delivered for the New York State Office of Mental Health (OMH) in two decades. Located on the expansive 85‑acre Bronx Psychiatric Center campus, the 179,000‑square‑foot, 156‑bed building represents a fundamental shift in mental health care—designed to support recovery, independence and a return to community life. STV provided full architectural and engineering design services to bring this modern vision to life, creating a therapeutic environment filled with natural light, open spaces and warm, durable finishes uncommon in traditional psychiatric facilities.
What challenges did STV address?
The new facility required innovative engineering to accommodate its location on former wetlands and deliver a safe, resilient structure designed for high‑acuity behavioral‑health populations. The team also needed to incorporate new care philosophies into the building layout, integrate advanced safety features discreetly and ensure all systems met stringent state requirements. The five‑story structure demanded a foundation and framing system capable of managing complex soil and environmental conditions.
What solutions did STV deliver?
STV introduced a buckling restrained braced frame (BRBF) structural system – the first of its kind used in New York – to support the steel frame, reduce construction costs and maximize interior program space. The design integrates a “treatment mall” concept to promote independence, socialization and choice, while wide corridors, abundant daylight and high‑quality materials create a calming, dignified environment. STV also designed the deep foundation system required for the former wetland site, along with comprehensive architectural, civil, electrical, mechanical and landscape design services.
How does this project benefit the region and community?
The Adult Behavioral Health Center provides New York City with a modern, patient‑centered inpatient treatment facility that enhances safety, improves recovery outcomes and supports OMH’s mission to reintegrate individuals back into their families and communities. The landmark BRBF structural solution also sets a new precedent for resilient, cost‑effective healthcare design in New York.
