Ballston Multimodal Improvements Project

Arlington County and the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority jointly redesigned the Ballston-MU Metrorail Station’s street-level plaza to address the increased use of multimodal transportation in the region, as well as to enhance safety by improving pedestrian and transit circulation around the facility. Improvements included additional bus bays, new bus shelters, expanded bicycle parking and public space, new landscaping, and wayfinding signage.

STV provided construction management services for the project from preconstruction through project closeout. The project’s scope included preparing cost estimates and a baseline construction schedule, procurement support services, construction management support and project closeout documentation.

Additionally, the team coordinated with Arlington County to keep residents, businesses and transit users informed and involved while improvements were being developed. The comprehensive communications and marketing plan drove customers and stakeholders to the project’s website, as well as surveys and public meetings to gain public feedback on potential improvements. The team planned and facilitated outreach activities, including stakeholder briefings, pop-up engagements and online updates to support the project’s design and construction phases.

Creating a more welcoming plaza for pedestrians and transit users near key Metrorail station.
