Boeing Center South, Chinook H-47 Focus Factory Conversion Program

As global demand increased for the H‑47 Chinook – the U.S. Army’s primary heavy‑lift helicopter – The Boeing Company launched an ambitious initiative to transform its Center South facilities into a high-efficiency “focused factory” for H‑47 production. The multi-year effort modernized an 85-year-old industrial complex, introducing new tools, spaces and workflows that streamline assembly for this mission-critical aircraft. As construction manager and owner’s representative, STV played a central role in delivering 14 major capital renovation projects that ultimately resulted in a state‑of‑the‑art, LEED®‑certified manufacturing environment.

What challenges did STV address?

The existing facility required extensive modernization while supporting an active aviation production line operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The project team needed to upgrade aging buildings, integrate new production systems and reconfigure floor layouts – all without interrupting aircraft assembly as Boeing increased Chinook output to meet urgent military needs. Maintaining safety, schedule discipline and operational continuity were crucial to success.

What solutions did STV deliver?

STV developed a comprehensive fast-track schedule and carefully phased construction plan that enabled major renovations to occur in parallel with continuous production. The firm coordinated daily with Boeing shift managers, designers, contractors and production staff to meet sensitive milestones and avoid disruption. Phased renovation sequences embedded directly into construction schedules allowed rehabilitation work to advance safely above, around and adjacent to active assembly areas. This highly collaborative, integrated approach supported both operational efficiency and LEED-certified sustainability goals.

How does this project benefit the client and region?

The converted facility significantly improves production speed, flexibility and manufacturing quality for the H‑47 program, helping Boeing meet national defense needs while extending the life of a historic industrial campus. Enhanced workflows, upgraded systems, and modern energy-efficient infrastructure strengthen regional manufacturing jobs and support long-term innovation in the aerospace sector.
