Chef Menteur Pass Railroad Bridge

The Chef Menteur Pass Railroad Bridge in New Orleans, Louisiana, is a critical link along CSX Transportation’s (CSXT) freight corridor connecting New Orleans and Mobile. Originally built in 1925, the 280‑foot center‑bearing swing span consists of three truss spans that continue to support heavy rail traffic nearly a century later. As part of a broader General Engineering Consultant task order contract with CSXT, STV performed engineering design services to rehabilitate the bridge’s aging lower chord and floor system. The work strengthens structural performance and ensures continued reliable operations for one of the Gulf Coast’s most active freight routes.

What challenges did STV address?

The 1925 swing span had deteriorated lower chord elements and floor system components that required replacement without interrupting rail service. Because the swing mechanism and its machinery had to remain fully operational throughout construction, STV needed to design a rehabilitation sequence that fit within the existing geometry and did not destabilize the swing span. Limited access and the need to work between panel points added complexity to planning and execution.

What solutions did STV deliver?

STV developed new lower chord elements engineered to fit between existing members, enabling a phased replacement strategy. Work began at the center pivot area and progressed outward to maintain stability. The design included temporary machinery supports embedded in the structure, allowing repairs to proceed without disrupting rail operations. STV also delivered improvements to the floor system to restore load‑carrying capacity and extend the structure’s service life.

How does this project benefit the community?

The rehabilitation preserves a vital freight corridor that supports regional commerce throughout the Gulf Coast. By extending the life of a historic movable bridge and improving operational reliability, the project ensures continued access for industries, ports and communities that rely on this essential transportation link.
