The Darrell Road at Neville Road/Case Road Roundabout Conversion project in Wauconda Township, Illinois, aims to enhance safety and mobility for an area expecting a twofold increase in traffic over the next two decades. By transforming existing T-intersections into a single-lane roundabout, this initiative aims to improve sight lines and safety for over 10,000 daily users while integrating Complete Streets amenities, including sidewalk and bicycle paths that connect to the Black Crown Forest Preserve.
STV provided construction management services on behalf of the Lake County Division of Transportation, coordinating a range of activities, such as asphalt reconstruction, drainage installation and a full detour.
A significant challenge during construction was managing moisture and erosion issues due to existing ditches, which required innovative solutions for subgrade drainage and soil treatment to ensure stable topsoil conditions. The project also included utility coordination and community engagement through a virtual pre-construction open house, ensuring open communication with local residents and businesses. By effectively managing these elements, STV played a crucial role in successfully delivering the project ahead of schedule, significantly enhancing the region’s transportation infrastructure.
