DART Light Rail Transit System Phase I and II

To meet the transportation needs of a rapidly expanding metropolitan area, Dallas Area Rapid Transit launched one of the nation’s largest light rail implementation programs. STV, in joint venture, played a central role in delivering both Phase I and Phase II of the DART system. Phase I introduced 13 stations across a 25‑mile route, while Phase II more than doubled the system by adding 46 miles of track and 26 new stations. Together, these phases established a comprehensive light rail network that supports sustained growth across the Dallas region.

What challenges did STV address?

Building a large-scale light rail system across a fast-growing urban environment required coordinating engineering, construction and system integration across densely developed corridors. Phase II in particular demanded extensive planning to add dozens of stations and new guideway rapidly while maintaining schedule discipline and minimizing disruption to local communities.

What solutions did STV deliver?

In Phase I, STV provided program management, design and construction management services, overseeing all civil, structural, geotechnical, electrical, mechanical and architectural engineering activities. For Phase II, STV again served in joint venture and was responsible for the initial design of all facilities infrastructure, including ballasted, direct fixation and embedded track, bridges, utilities and grade crossings. The team also delivered final design and construction management for the 28‑mile Green Line guideway connecting Pleasant Grove to Carrollton.

How does this project benefit the region?

The DART system enhances mobility, reduces roadway congestion and supports economic development throughout the Dallas–Fort Worth region. The expansion provides reliable, high‑capacity transit options that connect residents to jobs, education and cultural destinations.
