Denver Union Station Expansion

High level project overview

The transformation of Denver Union Station into a multimodal hub is one of the most significant transit investments in Colorado’s history. The $484 million expansion supports the Regional Transportation District’s FasTracks rail program, Amtrak service, regional and intercity buses and future mobility needs within the city’s rapidly growing downtown. As part of this major initiative, STV provided Project Management Oversight services on behalf of the Federal Transit Administration (FTA), helping ensure that project delivery remained efficient, compliant and aligned with federal expectations.

What challenges did STV address?

The project required integrating major transit functions within a dense urban environment while maintaining operations across multiple modes. The expansion included an at‑grade eight‑track commuter rail station, relocation of the regional bus facility beneath 17th Street and relocation of the light rail station to the Consolidated Mail Line. Managing a project of this scale demanded careful environmental oversight, financial accountability and design compliance at each stage of development.

What solutions did STV deliver?

STV prepared recurring reports on environmental mitigation, tracked design progress and evaluated requisitions to ensure proper use of federal funds. The firm monitored technical and administrative performance across all components of the program, providing the FTA with clear, independent assessments of project status, risks and emerging issues. This oversight helped maintain efficiency and transparency throughout a complex, high‑visibility infrastructure effort.

How does this project benefit the region?

The expanded station strengthens Denver’s role as a regional transportation gateway, improving passenger connections, reducing congestion and supporting long‑term downtown growth. The redesign enhances transit reliability and convenience while integrating multiple modes into a unified, accessible urban hub.
