As part of the New Jersey Schools Development Authority’s commitment to expand educational capacity and modernize facilities across the state, the Dr. Hani Awadallah Elementary School provides seating for 650 K-8 students in Paterson. The new, 21st‑century school features three interconnected wings: an academic wing with a media center, a central classroom and administrative wing and a third wing housing a gymnasium and cafetorium. The project also includes a one‑of‑a‑kind pedestrian bridge spanning active rail lines, giving South Paterson students a safe, direct route to the school.
What challenges did STV address?
The project team needed to maintain an aggressive schedule while updating critical building systems – such as HVAC and IT infrastructure – to current standards. Additionally, the installation of a pedestrian bridge over active NJ TRANSIT rail lines required extensive coordination to avoid service disruptions and community impacts.
What solutions did STV deliver?
STV provided comprehensive construction management services throughout the program. Working closely with the project team, STV oversaw targeted redesigns of essential building systems to improve performance and code compliance. STV and the contractor also executed the overnight installation of the pedestrian bridge, completing the lift in just three and a half hours, without interrupting commuter service or generating community complaints.
How does this project benefit the community?
The new school reduces overcrowding and delivers a modern, flexible learning environment that supports long‑term academic growth. The pedestrian bridge enhances neighborhood safety and connectivity, providing a protected crossing for students and residents over active rail operations. Together, the school and bridge strengthen the South Paterson community and expand access to high‑quality educational facilities.
