The Henry Hudson Bridge, a 2,208‑foot fixed‑arch structure connecting the Bronx and Upper Manhattan, is one of the busiest river crossings in the New York region. To reduce congestion and improve tolling efficiency, the Triborough Bridge and Tunnel Authority advanced a major initiative to implement open road tolling (ORT) along the structure while rehabilitating the bridge’s mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems. STV provided construction engineering and inspection services for the multi‑phase program, which included upgrades to the upper‑ and lower‑level toll plazas and the southbound approach.
What challenges did STV address?
The project required installing ORT infrastructure while keeping traffic moving across a high‑volume commuter bridge. STV needed to coordinate utility relocations, manage construction staging and ensure that cutovers to new electrical and communication systems occurred without disrupting bridge operations. Integrating new fiber lines, drainage upgrades, barrier installations and toll equipment enclosures within a confined corridor added further technical complexity.
What solutions did STV deliver?
STV supervised the installation of ORT gantries, spare fiber optic lines, new drainage systems, pavement reconstruction, barrier placement and roadway striping. The team monitored the relocation of utilities and underground storage tanks and guided traffic maintenance throughout construction. STV also oversaw the installation and cutover to a new power distribution system and emergency generator, ensuring uninterrupted tolling operations during the transition.
How does this project benefit the community?
The integration of ORT improves traffic flow, reduces delays and enhances safety for the thousands of daily bridge users. Modernized MEP systems support long‑term reliability, increasing operational efficiency while reducing maintenance needs across this critical regional connection.
