I-490/IL 390 Interchange Project

This program is building a new full-access interchange connecting the new I-490 Tollway with Illinois Route 390, delivering direct access to the west side of O’Hare International Airport and significantly improving regional mobility. This transformative infrastructure initiative expands connectivity between major tollways, local arterials and the nation’s busiest aviation hub.

What challenges does STV address?

The project confronts significant engineering and operational challenges, including integrating 16 new ramps and 15 bridges within tight right-of-way constraints, coordinating construction over active freight rail lines and local roadways, and managing complex earthwork, drainage and retaining systems while minimizing impacts on traffic and adjacent communities. Close collaboration with DuPage and Cook County, railroad partners and local agencies facilitates alignment across mobility, safety and utility demands.

What solutions is STV delivering?

STV is providing construction management and construction inspection services for six interchange ramps and associated bridge structures under a key design-build phase. The work includes four large flyover ramps linking I-490 with Route 390 and two direct access bridges on the airport’s west edge. STV is coordinating scheduling to avoid conflicts with rail operations and is working with partners on advanced traffic staging, retaining wall installation and local access maintenance throughout construction.

How will this project improve travel and connectivity?

Once complete, the interchange will provide unprecedented mobility for motorists, freight and airport traffic by delivering direct western access to O’Hare Airport and linking major toll corridors. The expanded network will reduce congestion on local roads, shorten travel times for commuters and commercial vehicles and support economic growth across Chicago’s suburbs and the broader Midwest region.
