STV provided comprehensive design services for the long-planned Phase II construction of the I-581 and Valley View Boulevard interchange, a Virginia Department of Transportation project. The almost $40 million design-build project has significantly improved traffic congestion and safety in the area, which includes the Valley View Mall, one of the largest malls in southwest Virginia.

STV and LANE Construction Corporation, the contractor, modified the existing partial cloverleaf interchange into a diverging diamond interchange (DDI). A DDI does not require vehicles to cross oncoming traffic to make left-hand turns, improving safety and moving a high volume of vehicles without increasing the number of lanes. The DDI decreased the interchange’s overall footprint, thus reducing the required width of the bridge carrying Valley View Boulevard over I-581 by 37.5 feet and the southbound I-581 deceleration lane by more than 900 feet.
