A four-year, $180 million design-build project, I-Move Kentucky delivered crucial safety, mobility and quality-of-life improvements across Kentucky’s busiest highway corridors. The project included upgrades to I-265, I-71 and I-64 in Jefferson and Oldham Counties, addressing four projects identified as statewide priorities through the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet’s (KYTC) Strategic Highway Investment Formula for Tomorrow (SHIFT) initiative:
- The I-265 widening added one 12-foot lane of traffic in each direction to create a total of six lanes between KY 155 (Taylorsville Road) and I-71.
- I-71/I-265 interchange improvements created a collector-distributor lane on southbound I-71, improving safety and ramp movements to and from I-265.
- The I-71 widening added one 12-foot lane of traffic in each direction to create a total of six lanes between I-265 and KY 329 (Crestwood/Pewee Valley exit).
- The I-64/I-265 interchange was reconstructed as Kentucky’s first partial turbine interchange, eliminating high-volume loop ramps and easing weaving traffic.
As part of a HALL Contracting design-build team, STV served as the design lead for I-Move Kentucky, delivering comprehensive services in roadway, utilities and structures design, surveying and geotechnical engineering.
Highlights included structural conceptual designs, technical design consultation and QA/QC for several key bridges and the complete design and detailing of a 20-foot-tall reinforced concrete retaining wall designed to meet new crash wall standards.
The overall program consisted of over 28 miles of roadway reconstruction and widening, five new bridges, eight bridge widenings, 5.7 miles of noise barrier walls and nine reinforced concrete box culvert (RCBC) extensions. .
