Long Island Rail Road Mid-Suffolk Electric Yard

The expansion of Long Island Rail Road’s (LIRR) existing storage yard in Ronkonkoma is a key part of the LIRR’s larger efforts to increase and provide more reliable and efficient commuter rail service into Manhattan. These efforts are best embodied by the opening of Grand Central Madison.

STV designed the original yard and was selected by LIRR to provide preliminary design for track, signal and traction power modifications needed for an 11-track expansion of the facility to connect it to the existing LIRR main line and associated wash/lead tracks. STV also prepared 30-percent design documents to be used during the design-build procurement process, as well as performed an environmental assessment for the expanded Mid-Suffolk Yard.

An expanded rail yard provides the maintenance capacity needed for larger service enhancements.
