NJ Transit Meadows Maintenance Complex Expansion

The Meadows Maintenance Complex (MMC) in Kearny, New Jersey, is the central hub for NJ TRANSIT’s rail vehicle maintenance and storage operations – one of the most critical facilities supporting the nation’s third‑largest transit system. Originally conceptualized and designed by STV, the MMC has long served as the backbone of NJ TRANSIT’s equipment management strategy. As systemwide demands grew, NJ TRANSIT advanced a major expansion to enhance maintenance capacity, improve operational efficiency and reduce long‑term lifecycle costs. STV led the planning, design and delivery of this multi‑building program, strengthening the MMC as a future‑ready maintenance and operations center.

What challenges did STV address?

NJ TRANSIT required expanded maintenance infrastructure that could integrate specialized equipment – including a 100‑ton drop table and advanced train‑washing capabilities – within an active, space‑constrained yard. The site’s proximity to wetlands required extensive environmental and geotechnical assessments, while ongoing operations demanded a phased approach to minimize service disruptions.

What solutions did STV deliver?

STV delivered comprehensive architectural, structural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, industrial and civil engineering services. Major additions included a 10,000‑square‑foot train washer building, a significantly expanded service and inspection facility, new storage structures and a 13,000‑square‑foot locomotive shop expansion featuring the state‑of‑the‑art drop table. STV also designed expansions to Buildings 1 and 4, adding a high‑bay warehouse, inspection tracks and dedicated cleaning areas. A carefully sequenced construction plan reduced the overall timeline by six months while maintaining full yard functionality.

How does this project benefit the region?

The upgraded MMC enhances NJ TRANSIT’s ability to maintain and deploy its rail fleet efficiently, improving service reliability for millions of riders. Modernized facilities reduce maintenance costs, streamline workflows, support long‑term fleet modernization and reinforce system resilience across the state’s critical transportation network.
