Long Island Rail Road Mid-Suffolk Electric Yard

The expansion of the Long Island Rail Road’s (LIRR) Mid‑Suffolk Electric Yard in Ronkonkoma is a key component of the agency’s larger efforts to increase capacity and improve reliability as part of system enhancements tied to the opening of Grand Central Madison. By enlarging the yard and modernizing supporting systems, LIRR strengthens its ability to stage, maintain and deploy trains more efficiently, supporting expanded service into Manhattan and boosting overall operational flexibility across the network.

What challenges did STV address?

To meet future service needs, LIRR required a storage and maintenance yard that could accommodate more trains and operate seamlessly with the Main Line. The project involved connecting an 11‑track expansion to existing infrastructure, modifying track geometry and coordinating significant upgrades to signals, traction power and wash/lead tracks. STV was tasked with developing a design that supported operational growth while minimizing impacts on ongoing service.

What solutions did STV deliver?

STV designed the original yard and was selected to provide preliminary engineering for the expansion, including modifications to track, signals and traction power. The team prepared 30‑percent design documents for use during the design‑build procurement process and conducted an environmental assessment for the expanded facility. STV’s work ensured that the new yard design met operational, safety and environmental requirements while aligning with LIRR’s long‑term service goals.

How does this project benefit the region?

The expanded yard provides the storage and maintenance capacity needed to support enhanced rail service into Manhattan, reduce congestion and improve reliability for riders across Long Island. By enabling more efficient train operations, the project contributes to faster travel times, improved customer experience and strengthened regional mobility.
