MBTA Wellington Carhouse Expansion

As part of a larger program to enhance the capacity of its transit fleet, the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) contracted with STV to perform design and construction support services to expand the 40-year-old Wellington Carhouse in Medford, MA.

Project plans included renovating the 120,000-square-foot space and integrating a 12,000-square-foot single-bay addition, as well as introducing new energy-efficient systems.

This expanded space features an additional track inspection pit, an overhead inspection platform that will increase car service capacity, new cranes, lifts and mechanical equipment, and replacements for all track bay doors and roofing. The electrical system layouts for the double-ended substation will integrate new transformers and a programmable automation controller.

The facility also underwent accessibility enhancements, upgrades to security, fire, mechanical, HVAC, electrical, and plumbing systems, and improvements to its roadway and temporary switchgear.

Expanded carhouse allows MBTA to better service its rail fleet.
