As part of a major program to expand and modernize its transit fleet, the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) advanced a comprehensive upgrade and expansion of the 40‑year‑old Wellington Carhouse in Medford. The project focused on enhancing the facility’s capacity to service and maintain rail vehicles more efficiently while integrating new energy‑efficient building systems and supporting long‑term operational needs. STV provided design and construction support services for the renovation of the 120,000‑square‑foot carhouse and the addition of a new 12,000‑square‑foot single‑bay expansion.
What challenges did STV address?
The existing carhouse required modernization to meet the mechanical and electrical demands of a growing fleet. Aging infrastructure limited service capacity and constrained the ability to integrate new equipment. The project also required improving accessibility, introducing advanced systems and coordinating work within an active maintenance environment while minimizing disruption to daily MBTA operations.
What solutions did STV deliver?
STV’s work included upgrades to mechanical, electrical, fire protection, HVAC and plumbing systems as well as improvements to roadway access and temporary switchgear. The expanded facility features a new track inspection pit, an overhead inspection platform designed to boost service throughput, new cranes and lifts, and replacements for all track bay doors and roofing. STV’s design also supported the integration of a double‑ended substation with new transformers and a programmable automation controller, strengthening the facility’s overall reliability.
How does this project benefit the region?
With improved maintenance capacity and modernized systems, the expanded Wellington Carhouse allows MBTA to better service its rail fleet, enhance vehicle reliability and support more efficient transit operations. These upgrades strengthen and make the transportation network more resilient for riders across Greater Boston.
