Metro-North Railroad Dual-Mode Locomotive Procurement

As rail agencies turn to more sustainable solutions for their rolling stock, Metro-North Railroad is introducing a new dual-mode locomotive in New York and Connecticut. The locomotive will be capable of running in traditional diesel mode and electric mode and is built to current Environmental Protection Agency Tier IV standards allowing for operation within the Park Avenue Tunnel and on third rail territory across New York State.

STV’s vehicle team supported the procurement of the locomotive, performing design reviews, test coverage and vehicle inspection services. Siemens Mobility is the car builder.

In addition to being able to operate in the Park Avenue Tunnel – thereby allowing Metro-North to potentially offer a single-seat ride into New York City from unelectrified areas of the region’s commuter rail network – the new dual-powered locomotives will also offer higher traveling speeds while reducing CO2, particulate matter and nitrogen oxide emissions.

A locomotive offering riders more convenience while providing more environmentally-friendly benefits to the community.
