MTA Wayside Power Facilities Improvements

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority Construction & Development selected STV to provide general engineering consultant services for the design phase of improvements to 22 wayside power facilities across Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx. The program encompasses 10 substations and 12 circuit breaker houses, replacing aging assets and strengthening the power network that supports subway service for millions of riders across New York City.

What challenges is STV addressing?

Much of the existing equipment is beyond its useful life, making modernization essential to reducing unplanned outages, shortening recovery times during incidents and supporting a more stable power network. The program also requires improvements across structural, environmental and mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems, including hazardous materials abatement where required.

What solutions is STV delivering?

As general engineering consultant, STV is overseeing scope development and program management for the design of repairs, replacements and upgrades to traction power equipment. Improvements include modern switchgear, rectifiers, transformers and control systems, along with energy-efficiency and resiliency upgrades. STV’s scope also includes a feasibility study of reversible traction power systems that could capture regenerative braking energy, as well as AI-enabled thermal imaging to help prevent equipment failures.

How will this project benefit the region?

Modernizing these wayside power facilities will strengthen the infrastructure that keeps New York City subway riders moving each day. The improvements are intended to reduce unplanned outages, improve recovery during incidents and support a more reliable, resilient power network while helping position the system for long-term growth.
