The New York Police Academy in Queens, NY, is the most advanced, self-contained police training academy in the world. Replacing an aging facility, the new 730,000-square-foot, glass-paned complex houses an eight-story classroom and office building, a 240,000-square-foot physical training building complete with a gymnasium and pool, an auditorium, cafeteria and library, plus a central utility plant.
The New York City Department of Design and Construction contracted the STV/Turner Construction Company joint venture to provide a range of construction management services for a new training academy for the New York City Police Department (NYPD). Uniting all the NYPD’s training resources at one complex, the new facility allows up to 2,000 recruits to immerse themselves in simulated settings that replicate unique scenarios crucial for law enforcement training.
The project team was large and diverse with 65 prime subcontractors and 300 second-tier contractors involved in the design and construction process. Due to its location on a former landfill and within a residential area just 14 miles outside of midtown Manhattan, the LEED®-certified facility featured a complex environmental compliance process.
Following its completion, the New York Police Academy was honored by Engineering News-Record and Building Design + Construction magazines, as well as the American Council of Engineering Companies of New York.
