North Station Draw 1 Bridge Replacement

The North Station Draw 1 Bridge traverses the Charles River to connect Boston’s North Station to the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority’s (MBTA) commuter rail. The MBTA selected STV to provide engineering design services to replace the existing bridge spans with a new, six-track crossing. The firm services include the design of movable bridge spans, a replacement signal tower, a new pedestrian walkway, subsequent track and signal work, and the addition of two platform tracks at North Station.

To further support the project’s completion, STV provided technical assistance in developing a comprehensive benefit-cost analysis that allowed the MBTA to secure a $472 million MPDG Mega grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation. It is the largest federal grant the MBTA has received in its history.

When complete, the improved bridge will allow for an increase in the number of platforms available for passenger service as well as improved train traffic flow, all while providing the same vertical clearance to boats passing through.

Improving access and congestion on a historic movable bridge while demonstrating multi-faceted expertise by supporting a historic federal grant application.
