Ottawa Stage 2 Light Rail Extension

Ottawa’s Stage 2 Light Rail Transit (LRT) expansion builds upon the success of Stage 1 and reflects the city’s commitment to sustainable mobility, equity and long‑term growth. Spanning 50.5 kilometers with 24 new stations, the program significantly expands the O‑Train network and strengthens multimodal connections across Canada’s capital. STV, in joint venture with AECOM, Stantec and Delve, provided preliminary engineering, design oversight, construction management, program management and operations support for this transformative infrastructure investment.

What challenges did STV address?

Ottawa needed a large‑scale expansion that improved regional connectivity while integrating with existing systems, serving rapidly growing communities and meeting increasing ridership demands. Delivering multiple corridors simultaneously – the South extension to Limebank and the Airport spur, as well as the East extension from Blair to Trim – required extensive coordination, systems integration and solutions that maintain reliability and resiliency across a diverse set of environments.

What solutions did STV deliver?

STV provided oversight across design‑build packages, ensured systemwide standards, supported construction management and guided the integration of new track, stations, passing sidings and operational upgrades. The South extension added 1,800 new park‑and‑ride spaces and improved access to the airport, while the East extension delivered 12.5 kilometers of new rail and five new stations. STV’s program‑wide approach ensured consistent quality, passenger experience enhancements and seamless expansion of the O‑Train network.

How does this project benefit the community?

The Stage 2 extensions expand access to reliable transit, reduce congestion for south‑ and east‑end commuters and support Ottawa’s climate and mobility goals. Enhanced capacity strengthens regional connectivity and provides more residents with fast, sustainable travel options.
