Queens College Laboratory Renovations

Queens College, one of the largest senior colleges within the City University of New York system, sought to transform outdated physics and astronomy laboratories into modern biology teaching spaces to meet evolving curriculum needs. STV provided architectural and engineering design as well as construction management services under a design‑build contract, delivering a comprehensive renovation of approximately 5,100 square feet. The redesigned laboratories and prep rooms now support hands‑on learning, updated research methodologies and modern safety and ventilation standards essential for today’s science education.

What challenges did STV address?

The college needed to convert legacy laboratory spaces into fully functional biology labs with stringent mechanical and safety requirements. This included integrating new gas and drainage systems, upgrading building infrastructure to current codes and creating flexible workspaces that would support collaborative learning – all within the constraints of an existing building.

What solutions did STV deliver?

STV redesigned the lab environments with new casework, fume hoods and reconfigured prep rooms to meet contemporary biology teaching needs. Student workstations were organized into four island‑style configurations featuring chemical‑resistant countertops and secure base cabinetry. Mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire protection systems were modernized to support safe operations and compliance with updated code requirements. STV’s construction management ensured coordinated delivery across trades while meeting quality and timeline goals.

How does this project benefit the community?

The renovated laboratories enhance STEM education at Queens College by providing safe, modern and collaborative environments that support student engagement and scientific discovery. These improvements strengthen academic programming and prepare students for careers in research and science‑based industries.
