As a key component of the larger Gateway Hudson River Tunnel program, the replacement of the Sawtooth Bridges in Kearny, NJ, will modernize the most congested 10-mile section of the Northeast Corridor by doubling track capacity and increasing speeds from 60 mph to 90 mph.
STV, in a joint venture led by AECOM, is providing program management and construction management services to support Amtrak’s goal to improve operational reliability and address state-of-good repair needs in the corridor.
The Sawtooth Bridges were originally constructed in 1907 and today support more than 400 daily trains operated by Amtrak and NJ TRANSIT. The replacement program is constructing three new bridges along a 1.9-mile corridor between Newark Penn Station and Secaucus Junction.
The joint venture is utilizing a multi-phased alternative delivery approach to implement project planning and oversee delivery of the upgraded and new structures. The team is also overseeing design coordination and managing interactions with railroads, utilities and third parties.
